November Trading Jumps 68% Over Last Year

     The Options Industry Council (OIC) announced that total options trading volume in November reached 310,801,122 contracts, a 68.1 percent increase over the year-ago level of 184,926,170 contracts. This marks the first time options volume surpassed 300 million contracts during a trading month. Average daily volume for November was 14,800,054 contracts.

Year-to-date options volume stands at 2.62 billion contracts, up 41.3 percent over the same point in 2006. Year-to-date daily volume is averaging 11,366,194 contracts, up 41.3 percent compared to the same period last year.

Equity options saw 282,852,587 contracts traded which resulted in a 67.9 percent increase over November 2006. Year-to-date equity options volume is 2.37 billion contracts, up 40.5 percent over the same point last year. Daily equity options volume had an average of 13,469,171contracts per day in November, which was an increase of 67.9 percent over the same month last year.

November Highlights:

November saw three of the highest volume days ever recorded. On November 8, 22,958,106 contracts were traded, becoming the second highest trading day on record for total volume, while equity options trading set a new record with 20,730,201 contracts changing hands.

On November 12, total options volume reached 19,971,779 contracts traded becoming the fourth highest trading day on record. On the same day, equity options volume reached 18,367,983 contracts, making it the fourth highest equity options trading day on record.

On the following day, November 13, total options contracts changing hands reached 17,796,955, becoming eighth highest trading day on record. November 13 also saw 15,911,231 equity options contracts traded, becoming the eighth highest equity options trading day.
